ISTANBUL, TURKEY: MAKING MEMORIES
SEPTEMBER 8-15, 2024
7 DAYS/6 NIGHTS
TOUR DESCRIPTION

Begin your Turkey travel experience with a visit of Hippodrome, once of the vast arena that functioned as the heart of sporting (chariots races and athletics) events and political activities of the old city.  Visit the Blue Mosque, one of the most famed masterpieces of Ottoman religious architecture. Standing in great prestige with its six minarets and perfect proportioned dome, it is named after its Turquoise colored tiles made of quartz minerals. Ottoman Sultans preferred to pray in this timeless shrine due to its incomparable beauty until the empire collapsed after the World War. The more you listen to the in-depth lectures of your private guide today, the more you will comprehend the priorities the administrators of Constantinople had to execute to ensure that the city continues its existence in safety against external threats.
Take a short walk to the magnificent Hagia Sophia, the Church of Divine Wisdom. Ranking as one of the greatest marvels of World architecture, this awe-inspiring building was constucted as a basilica in the 6th century by Byzantine Emperor Justinian.   Your half day tour will end with a visit to the Grand Bazaar, the vast and legendary covered market that is the biggest souk in the world, with nearly 4,000 shops of antiques, jewelry, and carpets. You will also enjoy a traditional Turkish coffee.

A Be Local Eat Local Experience: TURKISH COFFEE AT SARK KAHVESI

Take time to enjoy a traditional Turkish coffee at the historical coffee roaster located in the Grand Bazaar. Each variety of coffee has been prepared with a blend of traditional knowledge, experience and of course a true passion for coffee.  Rest of day at leisure, overnight at the hotel.

Half Day City Tour

You will visit the Spice Market, the second largest covered market in Istanbul. It was constructed in the 1660s as part of the Yeni Camii (New Mosque) complex. The name derives from the herbs, and spices imported from or through Egypt. It is still the best place to buy Turkish delight, dried fruit, exotic spices and herbs. You will stop at Ali Muhiddin Haci Bekir’s shop to enjoy many varieties of Turkish delight.
Take a short break at Ali Muhiddin Haci Bekir’s shop, the inventor of one of Turkey's most famous delicacies called “Turkish Delight”. The name Haci Bekir has become a legend in Ottoman and Turkish confectionary and here you will be able to enjoy many varieties of this delicious, sweet treat. Soak up the old-world atmosphere of this charming shop and take home a box of delights as a wonderful souvenir.
Your last stop will be Rustem Pasha Mosque. Designed by the Ottoman imperial architect Mimar Sinan for Grand Vizier ‘’Son-in-Law’’ Rüstem Pasha (husband of Princess Mihrimah Sultana, one of the daughters of Suleiman the Magnificent), the construction was carried out from 1561 to 1563. The Rüstem Pasha Mosque is famous for its many exquisite Iznik tiles that depict a wide variety of beautiful floral and geometric designs. These priceless tiles have been used to decorate the mihrab, minbar, walls, columns and the interior and exterior façades of the enclosed portico. These tiles use the cherry red that is characteristic of the early Iznik period (1555-1620). No other mosque in Istanbul makes such a lavish use of these tiles.  Rest of day at leisure, overnight stay at the hotel in Istanbul.

Sunset Dinner Cruise

Later this evening, enjoy a spectacular illumination cruise between 19:30-23:30 gazing at the iconic structures of Istanbul as they glow against the night sky. Set menu dinner with limited local drinks (2 glass of local wine or 2 beers or 2 soft drinks) will be served on the boat.

Yerebatan Sarnıcı

Just a short walk across the square takes you to the Underground Cistern, the largest of the many underground cisterns built during the Byzantine Empire to supply the city with water. This cistern is especially fascinating because the Byzantine builders recycled many stone structures - capital heads and columns-- that had been used in earlier temples. Now an upside-down Medusa stares out at us from her watery home.   Rest of day at leisure.  · Overnight stay at the hotel in Istanbul.

TRAVEL INSURANCE
If for some reason you are unable to attend your highly anticipated trip, travel insurance can offer a means to recoup invested monies. Your reason for canceling could be 100 percent legitimate, but if the travel company has a no refund policy, though they will be sympathetic, it is unlikely the money can be returned. This is the power of a travel insurance policy. Subject to the policy purchased and its accompanying terms and conditions, filing a claim provides an avenue to recover your hard-earned money.
